Jibaro - A self-subsistence farmer or rural laborer, often from the mountainous regions of Puerto Rico. This definition can describe people from the mountains where my mother was born and raised (un campo de San Lorenzo, Quemado). A term I heard many times as a kid, mostly to poke fun at each other with, although as a kid, you never stop to think about the actual meaning behind the words you say. As my journey continues, I think about that term and its deeper meaning and what it actually represents, other than just the surface (“a person from the mountains”). The Jibaro and his Pava (hat) represent the enduring spirit, traditional values, and connection to the land and homeland of modern Puerto Ricans. It’s in my veins because of my mother, thank you, Mom! Symbols like the owl and the jibaros face, which are given shades of light blue (the original color of the Puerto Rican flag), symbolize wisdom and knowledge. The scroll featuring the Puerto Rican anthem “La Borinquena” shows our roots, a foundation, and the strength of who we are.
