Almost every Sunday growing up there was a ritual in my house, call Abuela. As a first generation Puerto Rican American the phone was how we met some of our very own family members for the first time. Ensuring to always ask for a blessing or “Bendición” as your greeting, it is a sign of respect that is strong to this day. I only got to know my abuelita from my fathers side and met my grandfather (mothers side) once before he died. Our phone conversations varied in length, but they always started out the same,
“Bendición Abuela”.
